Prior to 2020, Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal region had negligible agricultural export activity due to inadequate infrastructure and market linkages. The region's potential remained untapped, with exports amounting to only 151 metric tons (MT) in the fiscal year 2021-22. This underutilization resulted in missed economic opportunities for farmers and limited their access to global markets, hindering the region's overall economic growth and development.
APEDA identified the region's potential and initiated capacity-building programs for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to enhance their export capabilities.
Established essential infrastructure, including cold storage facilities and a quarantine and customs clearance center at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (LBSI) in Varanasi, to facilitate the export of perishable goods.
Organized exposure visits and training sessions for FPOs and exporters to familiarize them with international market standards and export procedures.
Facilitated buyer-seller meets to connect local producers with international buyers, expanding market access for Purvanchal's agricultural products.
Implemented the Krishi Udan Scheme to ensure cost-effective and timely air transportation of agricultural produce, particularly from Northeast, hilly, and tribal regions.
As a result of APEDA's strategic interventions, the Purvanchal region witnessed a significant surge in agricultural exports, with volumes increasing from 151 MT in FY 2021-22 to 702 MT in FY 2023-24. This growth positioned Uttar Pradesh as the third-largest agri-exporting state in India, reflecting the region's enhanced capacity to meet global demand. The establishment of critical infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives empowered FPOs and exporters, leading to the successful export of a diverse range of products, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains, thereby boosting the region's economic development and providing farmers with access to lucrative international markets.
