Before forming the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), small grape farmers in Nashik faced numerous challenges: low prices due to middlemen taking 30-40% of profits, high input costs for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, lack of access to export markets or premium buyers, and an average annual income of just ₹50,000 per farmer. These issues hindered their ability to sustain and grow their farming operations.
In 2018, over 250 small grape farmers in Nashik, Maharashtra, formed the Green Harvest FPO to collectively address their challenges.
The FPO achieved 100% organic certification, ensuring their produce met international quality standards.
In 2021, they exported their first 100-ton shipment of organic grapes to Germany, marking their entry into the global market.
By 2023, the FPO expanded its exports to six countries, including the USA, UK, Italy, France, and Portugal, exporting a total of 500 tons of grapes.
The FPO established a farmer training center, benefiting over 500 local farmers annually, and funded the education of 200 children of member farmers.
Women's self-help groups were formed within the FPO to produce value-added products, further enhancing income streams for members.
The Green Harvest FPO's transformation led to significant economic and social impacts: average farmer income increased from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 annually, collective savings of ₹1.2 crore annually through bulk input purchases, and export revenue grew from ₹50 lakh in 2021 to ₹5 crore in 2023. Socially, the FPO established a training center benefiting over 500 farmers annually, funded education for 200 children of member farmers, and formed women's self-help groups for value-added products.
